Why Sustainability

Healthcare is one of the world’s largest polluters, and medical devices are a major contributor to this environmental burden. The industry relies heavily on single-use or limited-use plastics for infection control and patient safety, generating massive volumes of waste that often end up in landfills or are incinerated, releasing hazardous emissions. Compounding the problem, strict regulatory requirements around sterility, patient safety, and infection control make it impossible to reuse or recycle most single-use medical devices, trapping the industry in a linear “take-make-dispose” model.

Given these constraints, the most practical and impactful approach within the current healthcare infrastructure is to replace conventional petroleum-based plastics with bio-based or plant-based materials in medical devices. These materials offer a drop-in solution that maintains the required performance, sterility, and regulatory compliance while significantly reducing the environmental footprint. By using compostable bio-origin materials, we can break the cycle of plastic waste without compromising on quality, patient safety, or clinical workflows—making sustainability achievable within today’s healthcare system.
